Sci-fi techno specialist Allen leaps into the cosmos with First Contact, a new mini-LP debuting his own From Another Star label. From the sampled dialogues of UFO crash sites to the bleeping soundscapes central to his explorations, the concept and theme is clear from the start. Following the tense chords and understated pulse of the opener, he moves into a pair of droning mood pieces. ‘The Listeners’ takes a harder turn, emphasizing increased movement in the beats against shifting layers of bleepscapes and concluding the album’s introductory first half. ‘Pattern Recognition’ slackens the warp number but ups the spin with its rotating rhythms and cosmic background noise, deliberately setting the tone for the second half of the voyage. Allen tightens down the hatches with waves of bass pulses in ‘Tight Beam’, updating its Millsean feel. Stern but subtly shifting movements of closer ‘Rio’ rub against sudden rhythmic accents, arriving like falling stars.
